The “Blue Church” as it is locally known, Our Lady of the Wayside Kilternan, is located in the foothills of the Dublin mountains. This unique church was built from timber in 1929 and is based on an Italian design that is commonly found in the United States. It was constructed to accomodate the increased local population after the first World War.  It has a seating capacity for only 150 people and is one of the most popular choices as a Dublin wedding venue with more than 2,000 being recorded so far. One of the more famous weddings in recent years was golfer Padraig Harrington’s caddy who married the golfing star’s sister-in-law.

Our Lady of the Wayside is the patron saint of travelers and her feast day is celebrated on the 24th of May.

As you can see from the photo below, Our Lady of the Wayside has been a fixture on the Main Street passing through Kilternan for nearly a Century.  It is a place of prayer and worship for so many faithful in the area and a unique treasure we want to pass down to our children and grandchildren.

As you know we will celebrate the World Meeting of Families ,WMOF, next August. As a Parish we are invited
to focus on the importance of Family and how we can as a Parish and as individuals support Families. Pope Francis
asks the question “does the family continue to be good news for today’s world ? And he answers I am sure the
answer is yes!

And this yes is firmly based on God’s plan “How much better our family life would be if we used the words …Please, Thank You and I’m sorry “

The Pastoral Council and the Parish Team invite you to participate as fully as you can in the preparation for this great event next year. I am hoping that younger members of the congregations and younger families will particularly
make an effort to participate in initiatives as a way of preparation for WMOF. Some suggestions so far are:
Family Fun Day in the Spring ;Parish Walk; Baptisms and Weddings which will emphasise the importance of Family
by receiving a special memento from the WMOF. I invite Parish School Children and their families to become involved. If you have an idea we would very much like to hear it. Our new Pastoral Centre will be open in about
four weeks time and this will help us greatly in our preparation. I would like us to renew our effort at being a place of welcome and hospitality for everyone.

Kind regards, Fr Andrew.
