History of Our Lady of the Wayside Kilternan
The “Blue Church” as it is locally known, Our Lady of the Wayside Kilternan, is located in the foothills of the Dublin mountains. This unique church was built from timber in 1929 and is based on an Italian design that is commonly found in the United States. It was constructed to accommodate the increased local population after the first World War. It has a seating capacity for only 150 people and is one of the most popular choices as a Dublin wedding venue with more than 2,000 being recorded so far. One of the more famous weddings in recent years was golfer Padraig Harrington’s caddy who married the golfing star’s sister-in-law.
Our Lady of the Wayside is the patron saint of travelers and her feast day is celebrated on the 24th of May.
As you can see from the photo below, Our Lady of the Wayside has been a fixture on the Main Street passing through Kilternan for nearly a Century. It is a place of prayer and worship for so many faithful in the area and a unique treasure we want to pass down to our children and grandchildren.
