What is the Anointing of the Sick?
‘By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.’ Catechism of the Catholic Church – Reference [1499]
Through the grace of this Sacrament the person who is ill receives the strength and gift of uniting him or herself more closely to the Passion of Christ. Suffering, which is a consequence of original sin, acquires new meaning, since those who suffer and receive this Sacrament participate in a unique way in the saving work of Jesus.
Who can receive the Sacrament?
It can be received by any Catholic whose health is in a critical state and it can also be received many times in one’s life. It is recommended to attend the Sacrament of Confession to receive the healing that comes with the forgiveness of sins. Any priest who comes to administer the Sacrament will be available for Confession upon request.
